Transpiration in Action: A Simple DIY Experiment to See How Plants ‘Sweat’

Let’s Make Plant Sweat Visible.

Ever wondered how plants cool themselves on hot days? Say hello to transpiration – a sneaky, silent process that’s always happening behind the scenes in your garden!

Transpiration is natures way of letting plants release excess water – kind of like how we sweat. Water travels up from the roots, through the stems, and out through tiny pores called stomata on the leaf surface. And guess what? This invisible plant process plays a huge role in keeping our green friends happy and healthy.

Transpiration

Why Do Plants Transpire?

Here are three cool reasons:

  1. Nutrient Uptake
Transpiration helps pull water—and with it, essential soil nutrients—up to the leaves. It also maintains turgor pressure, keeping the plant firm rather than floppy.
  2. Cooling Down
As water evaporates from leaf surfaces, it cools the plant. Without enough transpiration, a plant can overheat and wilt.
  3. Photosynthesis Power
Water is a key reactant in photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert sunlight into energy.

Try This Fun DIY Transpiration Experiment!

Want to see this process in action? Here’s a super easy and fun activity that makes plant sweat visible!

You’ll Need:

  • A clear ziplock bag
  • A piece of string
  • A leafy branch on a sunny tree

What to Do:

  1. Find a leafy branch that’s getting some nice sunlight.
  2. Gently place the ziplock bag over the branch and leaves.
  3. Seal the bag as far up as you can using the bag’s zipper, then secure it tightly with the string so no air can escape.
  4. Tilt the bag slightly downward so moisture gathers at the bottom.
  5. Leave undisturbed for 15–30 minutes.

What Will You See?
Check back after a while – the inside of the bag will start to fog up, and little droplets of water will collect at the bottom. That’s transpiration in action! You’ve just trapped plant sweat, and now you can see how hard your plant is working.
