Caladium (often called “angel wings”) is a genus of tuberous perennial plants in the Araceae family, prized for its vibrant, heart- or arrow-shaped leaves marked with contrasting veins and splashes of green, white, pink or red. Native to the tropical rainforests of South America, caladiums thrive in warm, humid conditions and are best grown in partial to full shade, where their foliage color really pops. They prefer rich, well-draining soil kept evenly moist (but never waterlogged) and will go dormant if temperatures dip below about 15 °C. In South African gardens, caladiums make stunning container subjects or underplantings beneath larger shrubs—just lift and store their tubers before winter’s first frost, then replant in spring once soil temperatures consistently exceed 18 °C.
